Viking Legal is me, Victoria. I am a non-practising attorney, specialising in contracts. Now while some may be sceptical, I consider myself an artist of sorts. I love reading, words and language. Creating a contract that is easy to read, covers the parties' intentions and is written in plain English is a work of art.
So who am I and what do I do? I am an attorney, non-practising (basically that means I don't work for a law firm and I don't go to court). I completed my LLB at the University of Pretoria and my articles at a law firm in Pretoria, Gauteng. Once I was admitted as an attorney I followed my heart and worked for a non-profit organisation, Lawyers for Human Rights. In 2008, after a year in the gender project I decided I needed to gain some experience in the commercial arena. I started as Legal Advisor at one of South Africa’s largest general aviation companies, National Airways Corporation. Over the next 6+ years I delved into the fascinating world of aviation. Contracts, regulations, policies and procedures, risks and million Rand/Dollar deals in a strong sales oriented environment pushed my black and white 'lawyers vision' to new horizons.
What did I learn at NAC? Lots. But what is the biggest lesson, the one I think of every time I sit down in front of a contract? "If I am not going to help facilitate business / facilitate the sale / the transaction, then I have no business being involved". Sales can be fast and loose. I see myself as the speedhump in business, not the boulder blocking the road!
